Project Kick Off in Sommerville, MA
Despite the rain, over 70 residents of Somerville and the greater Boston area braved the weather to sign the first 20 feet of the banner last Saturday. Folks hailed from several countries, including Haiti, Switzerland, Thailand and the U.K.

350-foot banner
People across the country are signing/painting a 350-foot banner, which I will display in Washington D.C. on October 24th as part of the International Day of Climate Action, which includes over 1,000 events in 100 countries linked by the campaign 350.org. These events will petition world leaders to negotiate a global climate treaty based on science to replace the expired Kyoto Protocol at the U.N. Climate Summit in December.
Why 350 feet?
350 feet represents 350 parts per million (ppm), the safe upper limit of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere in order to prevent runaway climate change, according to NASA's James Hansen (Hansen et. al 2008). For all of human history until 200 years ago, the level hovered at 275ppm; it is now at 390ppm and rising every day.
